Wedding Planner vs. Wedding Coordinator

What's the Difference?

Wedding Planning - 5/7/2021

When first starting the wedding planning process, brides-to-be might see many different terms unique to the wedding industry community that might leave them feeling unsure of which is which. A common misunderstanding is the difference between wedding planners and wedding coordinators. So, what is the difference?

The Oklahoma Bridal Show shares some distinctions between the two:

Wedding Planner:

1. Hired far in advance: Right after a couple gets engaged, they should hire a wedding planner to start the process. This is extremely helpful for brides that have busy lives as a wedding planner can take many of the tasks off of the couple's hands. Hiring early allows for them to have time to do just that.
2. Helps brides choose vendors: Wedding planners play a key role in helping soon-to-be married couples pick vendors by providing referrals, negotiating contracts, scheduling meetings and much more. This allows for brides and grooms to focus on things that are more important to them.
3. Works with wedding budgeting: One of the most important roles for wedding planners is working with the couple's budget. They give solid advice for not only determining a budget but also maintaining that budget throughout the planning process.

Wedding Coordinator:

4. Hired typically a month or two before the wedding: In contrast with a planner, a wedding coordinator is hired much later. This is because they are mainly responsible for the events that happen the day of the wedding not necessarily planning far in advance.
5. Keep track of day-of logistics: Some of the most basic roles of a wedding coordinator is keeping track of the day-of logistics such as guest count, the walk-through of the venue and running rehearsal.
6. Make sure the day of the wedding runs smoothly: Above all, the main job of a wedding coordinator is to make sure that the couple's wedding day runs smoothly from start to finish.
